A few months ago, Suzanne Broughton, lead blogger at OC Family, approached Post Fifth Pictures about a benefit for the Children’s Hospital of Orange County that takes place at the Honda Center every year. I’m quite a sucker for hockey related events so we made sure that we participated. This piece, shot on a 7D by Ashkan Memarian and Suzanne’s FLIP HD, was edited converting the 7D h.264 files to Apple ProRes using a Compressor Droplet. I am very excited for June 10 when I will be editing this pieces in Avid Media Composer 5.

I was in the middle of getting a cut ready for a client and realized I had not implemented the last feedback she had given me. Oops.

I had sent her 8 min worth of selects and takes I liked and she sent me notes on the ones she didn’t really like. Forgetting about those notes, I felt like I was in the rhythm of things and made another cut. I sent it on to her and realized while sending the e-mail I had not made those changes. Oops again.

I quickly wrote her an e-mail reminding her that I would fix those cuts quickly, taking them out asap. I did it with duplicate frames on Final Cut Pro.

I went into my sequence of selects and cut out the shots that she had given me the timecode for. I placed those clips in the sequence I had mistakingly sent. Made sure that the duplicate frames feature was selected (see image) and then took out the shot that were colored with the duplicate frames tool.

Sounds simple enough, right? Anyone else have another idea (other than the obvious do it right the first time) of how you could fix this without recutting from step one?

In the off chance that a DP asks me before he goes off to a shoot what kind of footage I would like, I always answer lots of coverage and points of view that I wouldn’t be able to see with my own eyes. I think this is the difference between a DP that can bring quality to your video and one that can’t. It’s easy to shoot what we can see with our own eyes, but the ones that can find something else, something we don’t see or normally notice, those are the ones I love to work with.

An example I will use is from The Killers new Blu-Ray/DVD from the 2nd track “This is Your Life.” The video is directed by Dick Carruthers, who has a great background of live concert DVDs. It is a fantastic live concert, I’d highly recommend in for your HDTV setup and Blu Ray collection. Some of the shots are a tad fast for me, I end up wanting more. That may be because I’ve been to a couple of The Killers shows though.

The specific example I want to mention from the clip above is my favorite shot in the whole show. Start the clip at 2:26 and listen to the bridge. Most of the shots are ones we can get from being an audience member. There are some close ups on Brandon Flowers (vocals) and Dave Koening (guitar) and the angles used include those from the crowd POV, which is great. I love feeling like I am there, but the magical moment of this song comes at 2:57 when we go from shots we can see with our own perspectives and our own eyes to one that we can never achieve by being there- being right up on stage, right behind Brandon Flowers. It’s an awesome pan from on stage. Until I saw this shot I never though swaying your hands in the air was cool

Getting these types of shots into your piece sell your skill as an editor and it will show your DP you know what to do with what he has taken the time to shoot.

Bryce: Every once in a while I find myself a tad bored in a project, so I look through my footage for an answer. And then there is a clip. A fun clip. Not because of the footage, but because I listen to the hilarious off-camera conversation between the DP, director, and/or other people involved on set. While freelancing on a recent project, I caught our director talking with Cole Webley (our DP) about another editor on the show. That editor is Mark Gillins, our production manager and editor with Post Fifth Pictures.

Mark is joining me on this post to give us some background. Tell us a little bit about the background context of this conversation and a little bit about the director.

Mark:

The subject of the project in question was a young, single girl from a town not too far away from me. Spending hours and hours looking through footage, editors tend to get to know the people they edit in interesting ways. I thought she was cute and fun, so I talked to the director — a native Spaniard with an accent thicker than peanut butter — and she agreed to ask the girl’s permission to give me her number.

The ensuing dinner date was fun, but nothing really came of it. However, when Bryce pulled me in to see the discovery he’d made while rummaging through some raw footage, it dawned on me that apparently I “loved her,” and the tears that followed were mixed with laughter and subconscious heartbreak.

Bryce: Not only was it funny that she talked about how much Mark “loved” his date, but that of all shots to shoot and talk gossip surely the shot of mud in a creek would have been the safe haven, easily overlooked. I found it, marked it in the finder and now watch it all the time because we find it hilarious. I am sure the director told the subject of the documentary/girl Mark took out that Mark “loved her… so much” or as we jokingly call it “laufed her so mauch.” It was one date, but the exaggeration of how much Mark “loved her to the point that he asked her for a date” because he had watched her footage for a cut of an episode makes us laugh.

We joke about this clip all the time. I am sure editors have good stories about how they wanted natural sound of the area, but the DP was chatting about breakfast. Shane Ross, over at Little Frog in High Def, told me about a shot he had with some people coming off of a boat. The sound would have been very useful, but instead his producer chatted with his DP over phone carrier service.

In January of 2009, we flew Brian Engblom, Versus Hockey Studio Analyst and winner of 3 Stanley Cups with the Montreal Canadians, to Salt Lake City to be interviewed for our presentation of 50 Hockey Tips.

Brian Engblom is well known in the hockey community for sporting one of the best mullets in the world of hockey. However, Brian cut his hair before the start of the 2008 season. It was a shock to many so we decided to ask Brian about it at the end of his interview.

Here is Brian Engblom with the mullet previous to the 2008 season.

Here is a more serious piece that we talked to Brian about, evaluating a player :
