“The “Lost” creative process is a collaborative one. As with most TV shows, each episode goes through the same process. Once an episode has wrapped shooting, the editor has anywhere between 3-5 days to assemble the 1st editor’s cut, depending on the production schedule. The editor’s cut is then sent to the episode’s director where he or she will have three days to work on the cut before turning it over to Damon and Carlton. The amount of time Damon and Carlton spend on an episode depends on the strength of the episode. Some need more time than others. After about three passes, they are usually ready to send the episode to the studio/network for their feedback. After getting the network notes and incorporating them into the episode, Damon and Carlton will have one last look at any lingering notes and will give approval to lock the episode and prep it for broadcast. One of the funnest parts of the process is sitting in the screening sessions with Damon and Carlton and listening to them restructure the order of scenes. I would say 4 out of 5 times, the restructuring of the episode makes the show a lot better. They are truly talented writers and producers and I consider myself lucky to be able to learn from them. On top of that, they treat all of us with respect. They’re great human beings and I think their humanity manifests itself in their work. They listen and welcome comments and feedback from editors and assistant editors alike. I know I’ve gotten spoiled working in such a positive collaborative effort and will miss this process when the series is over. It’s hard to believe it’s almost over. I started working on the show just after the pilot had been picked up by ABC and now here we are, almost at the end of the road. I appreciate your questions and hope you enjoy the last season of “Lost”.

Interview: Darren Holmes, A.C.E.

Darren Holmes, A.C.E. is an editor that has been around feature films, television and animation editing. In this respect I think he is a rather unique editor to have come in contact with. There are not many walls keeping him stuck into one genre because of his experiences.

Seth Estrada and I setup the interview with Darren Holmes to be with a few students studying film over at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. During the call Seth is with Darren at Dreamworks in Glendale, California and I am with a few students and faculty in Provo.

Darren is now working with Dreamworks full time working on a few different animated features. Many thanks to Darren. He’s been great to talk to. Listen to his story here on how he got into the business and about several of his experiences working in the industry.

Freelance or Full-Time? One of many questions.

That’s the struggle. While both have their obvious positives and negatives, its been an interesting debate during this economy. Are there many freelancers who have been forced to take other employment elsewhere to stay in their desired field or has the industry kicked them to the streets and forced them to pursue another career? I’m curious to hear what our readers have faced during the year of 2009 and how they plan to overcome, ride through or react during 2010.

I call 2009, so lovingly, the year of the favor. I worked on so many projects that were for friends or were involved with ownership rather than upfront payment. A couple of those projects were produced here at Post Fifth Pictures just to keep us busy in between projects. We did them to create our own opportunities and I think that is where many people falter in the industry. There are those who wait for things to happen hoping to ride out the waves of a recession and then there are those who create their own opportunities with the skills they have. What category do you fall under?

Approached by Brandon McMillian, host of NIGHT on Animal Planet, Bryce Randle cut a small demo for a new show aimed at documentary friendly networks. The demo was shown to full scale production companies and because of the work with Post Fifth Pictures, Brandon succeeded at getting a pilot created for a new show, Death Row Dogs.

Spring Communications: Basketball

Almost to the tagline!

This commercial Bryce edited working with Fifty Films in Salt Lake City for Spring Communications, the client. It was edited, along with three other pieces in this series, in three days in the month of October 2007.

No visual effects are present other than some logos painted off of the backboard.

It was a fun commercial. The director is Ben Hurst from Fueld Films in Denver, Colorado and the spot was produced by Rick McFarland and Love Communications.
