In the off chance that a DP asks me before he goes off to a shoot what kind of footage I would like, I …

In the off chance that a DP asks me before he goes off to a shoot what kind of footage I would like, I always answer lots of coverage and points of view that I wouldn’t be able to see with my own eyes. I think this is the difference between a DP that can bring quality to your video and one that can’t. It’s easy to shoot what we can see with our own eyes, but the ones that can find something else, something we don’t see or normally notice, those are the ones I love to work with.

An example I will use is from The Killers new Blu-Ray/DVD from the 2nd track “This is Your Life.” The video is directed by Dick Carruthers, who has a great background of live concert DVDs. It is a fantastic live concert, I’d highly recommend in for your HDTV setup and Blu Ray collection. Some of the shots are a tad fast for me, I end up wanting more. That may be because I’ve been to a couple of The Killers shows though.

The specific example I want to mention from the clip above is my favorite shot in the whole show. Start the clip at 2:26 and listen to the bridge. Most of the shots are ones we can get from being an audience member. There are some close ups on Brandon Flowers (vocals) and Dave Koening (guitar) and the angles used include those from the crowd POV, which is great. I love feeling like I am there, but the magical moment of this song comes at 2:57 when we go from shots we can see with our own perspectives and our own eyes to one that we can never achieve by being there- being right up on stage, right behind Brandon Flowers. It’s an awesome pan from on stage. Until I saw this shot I never though swaying your hands in the air was cool

Getting these types of shots into your piece sell your skill as an editor and it will show your DP you know what to do with what he has taken the time to shoot.

That’s the struggle. While both have their obvious positives and negatives, its been an interesting debate during this economy. Are there many freelancers who have been forced to take other employment elsewhere to stay in their desired field or has the industry kicked them to the streets and forced them to pursue another career? I’m curious to hear what our readers have faced during the year of 2009 and how they plan to overcome, ride through or react during 2010.

I call 2009, so lovingly, the year of the favor. I worked on so many projects that were for friends or were involved with ownership rather than upfront payment. A couple of those projects were produced here at Post Fifth Pictures just to keep us busy in between projects. We did them to create our own opportunities and I think that is where many people falter in the industry. There are those who wait for things to happen hoping to ride out the waves of a recession and then there are those who create their own opportunities with the skills they have. What category do you fall under?

Bryce Randle did the edit and small animations on this project. The piece is produced by Jerry Craven of SilverWing Films (silverwingfilms.com). This is a teaser to be played in movie theaters in Salt Lake City. It was shot on a JCV camera with HDV format. The full piece is 7 minutes and used by the school for interested parents. It would fall under the commercial/corporate categories of what we manage and edit.

One of the affiliates we work with is Saint Cloud Film. Made up of Jared Harris, Cole Webley and Julian Acosta, this group is one of our favorites to work with. They have done a lot of fun, detailed and impressive work. Check out their site at saintcloudfilm.com

One of my favorite spots to watch is directed by Cole Webley. His spot, Kodak “Memories,” was shortlisted at the Young Directors Award at Cannes in 2009.

Cole recently told us about his working experience with Post Fifth Pictures. “Post Fifth Pictures understands creativity and are confident about their work. I like that. I look forward to working with them again and again.”

Thanks guys. We are cutting a new spot for Saint Cloud Film right now and hope to have it up in the month of October on our site.
