We will be doing another Q&A, similar to the one we just did with Daryl Baskin last week, but this time with Lance Stubblefield. Lance has worked on LOST since the first season, starting as an assistant editor and has made the jump to editor for an episode last season and a few times this season. He has also worked in the trailer editing side of the business as well as assisting on the popular show Arli$$.
I have been able to visit Lance a few times in the past couple years and it has been very interesting to hear about the workflow he has been involved in. Now they are all tapeless, but the first time I visited him (during Season 4) they had tons of DVCAM tapes against the back wall for the flashbacks to season 1-3 as they showed up in the new scripts.
Send your questions away to Lance via the comments section of this page and we should have them answered in the next week or so.
What makes this island so special
Ok, seriously — with the strongly-directed vision and end destination of Lost (where important elements that could be overlooked in the editing process like glances from characters/shot timing/etc), how are the writers/director incorporated into the editing process of an episode and what is that workflow like?
Loaded question, I apologize.
I’m always curious to learn about an editor’s workflow, from ingesting the footage to exporting for other departments.
Trailer Editing
– Do you use the 3 act story structure even when creating a trailer?
– What is your workflow for creating a trailer? Do you get a trailer script? Do you watch through the movie/show several times and pick out pieces that you think will work?
– What are your thoughts about using VO vs. using clips that “let the characters tell the plot”?
– Do you like to pick a music track before you begin editing or do you prefer to get a feel for the flow of the trailer before picking music?
– What is good resource for trailer music and/or SoundFX?

What’s the relationship like on LOST between the editor, director, and the executive producers (Damon/Carlton)? Since the directors are in Hawaii shooting, do they even see cuts/give notes? If so, what’s that process? Also, I read that Damon & Carlton give editors a lot of freedom to experiment, move scenes, change the meaning of a shot, etc. That must be nice, creatively, to work in such a collaborative environment.
Treat your AEs well 🙂

I am crying that Lost is over. I can’t believe the US is watching the last season tonight. What are we going to do now that it’s gone. Matthew Fox is so sexy! I am going to miss him. What will J.J. Abrams cook up next?
I actually found this more enaittrening than James Joyce.
Therefore, people spend more time online.
