In a week I will be downloading Avid Media Composer 5.0. I’ve been delaying all edits of H.264 files. I have a batch of XDCAM files ready to test. I already have a client convinced we will use Avid on the next project instead of FCP because it is being shot on a 7D and the workflow will be faster. What other new tricks will I be able to conjure up in the “old dogs” software known as Avid.
On a small shoot yesterday, a client called me in to make sure this camera crew she hired was getting all the coverage and types of shots she wanted to see during our edit. I asked them about software preferences in editorial. It’s all FCP. All HDV. That sounds just like a big headache to me. Why not move with something faster workflow wise to save time and money? You know, the opportunity cost of the workflow?
I had lunch with an agency in Salt Lake City two weeks ago. After talking about a small piece I had edited, I showed them the piece on my laptop. “Is this color corrected already? It looks great!”
“No, it was shot on the 5dMarkII.” I responded.
They weren’t familiar with it.
I went to college with some of the guys from the agency and in college he was very interested in those sorts of things, new formats, mediums, etc. At what point do you just lose interest and it becomes a task to stay updated and to be “in the know?”
Just a few random thoughts during the week of my anticipation.
I’m not familiar with 5dMarkII…what are the specs on that?
Oh, wait…just googled it. Looks cool!
If some one wants to be updated with most up-to-date technologies after that he must be pay a quick visit this web site and be up to date daily.
You’re forgetting one thing, thgouh. The products you’re listing are truly version 1.0 things, expect for Mac OSX (which I can’t remember people to go bad over). Final Cut Pro’ X is a version 8 product. When developing a new product it’s hard. You have to think about what you want in there and what not. If you have no experience as with the iPod, iPhone and iPad 1, it’s a big gamble. However Apple has over 10 years of experience with professional video editing software. They where on the top of their game and where highly ranked in the market. Now they obviously made a choice here with FCPX; do we want the 1 million pro video editors or do we want the 20 million amateurs (don’t know the actual numbers) to also start using this software. Now you say Apple listens very well to their customers. That’s only partially true. They’ll put in small things for you, but they won’t ever acknowledge they’re wrong. There for they will not drop the whole idea behind Final Cut X and it will remain to be a grade up from iMovie 10 and a grade down from Final Cut PRO 7.
